A Lakeside Village

Writer's picture: Kent GallowayKent Galloway

After being home for one night, Mfutu, the nurse supervisor, and I left for Kiri by boat the following day. The chauffeur from the mission went with us because the river passed through the rainforest. There were many large creeks, small streams, and lakes, and one could quickly become lost. On the first day, we went to Ilunga, and the entire village waited on the bank to welcome us.

The following day, many people lined up to see me, and I did my best and checked 50 patients. We ate a quick lunch, loaded the boat, and headed for the next village that bordered a small lake. We entered a small creek filled with dead trees, stumps, and logs. When we arrived at the bank, a women's dance troupe met us. A half-mile trail led from the lake to the village. The women danced and sang all the way there.
