As I worked on "Courage in the Congo," I wrote down the names of people Jerry included in his letters. Through searches and referrals, I was able to communicate with many. Some contacts are from 30, 40, and 50 years ago. I will share excerpts from many who knew Dr. Jerry in this and future posts. You won't read these excerpts in the book since it is based solely on Jerry's letters.
"Jerry Galloway was in the Peace Corps the same time I was. He did not look like your typical doctor – he had gray hair that stuck out like an Afro, tie-dye t-shirts, and a couple pairs of basic jeans. The biggest impact Jerry had on me was that he steered me on a completely different career path. I had NEVER considered health care as a career for myself. I spent my post-Peace Corps career working in Health Policy and Admin for 30+ years. The fact that he went back to Zaire (now Congo) was a true act of courage because the place is so dysfunctional now. Jerry's commitment to health care and social justice was a gift." – Mary Kate Pung (photo by Mary Kate)
