I am excited to share more about Dr. Jerry Galloway's life as described by others. The whole story, "Courage in the Congo," is available on Amazon.
Mark Robbins (see May 2 post) referred me to Mary E. King, a Jimmy Carter presidential appointee with worldwide oversight of the Peace Corps. She wrote this about Dr. Jerry:
"I knew Jerry from when I was the Program Officer in Washington in the Office of Health Affairs and had to visit Beaufort-Jasper Counties in the Low Country of South Carolina." (Note: In 1971, Jerry was the medical director of a program serving 50,000 rural, poor Afro-Americans in S.C.).
"When I had responsibility as a Presidential Appointee in the Carter Administration for the Peace Corps and VISTA programs, I thought of Jerry as an ideal exemplar for an expansion of the Peace Corps so it could properly address fundamental health needs in impoverished countries. I brought him to headquarters in Washington. I had a great deal of respect for Jerry and had been immediately impressed when I had first encountered him at work in the Low Country". – Mary E.
