A Legacy Confirmed - Part 7

Writer's picture: Kent GallowayKent Galloway

Father Leopold Waterval shared some remembrances of Dr. Jerry Galloway.

"Once in a while, Jerry would disappear in the area of his dear Pygmy people. He devoted a lot of his time and medical knowledge to them, which sometimes caused envy and resentment with the dominating Bantu tribe. So it didn't last long before he was accused of diamond and gold traffic and brought before the local authorities. He even endured some time of imprisonment in the capital of Kinshasa. However, when this was broadcasted by Radio Vatican, he was soon released.

At the time of the "red diarrhea" epidemic (dysentery), Jerry experienced a difficult period as a doctor. We, his confreres in Pendjua, witnessed the strain this brought along for Jerry's health, and we tried to help in the best way possible.

Jerry was a very concerned missionary. He was loved by the local people, most especially by the Pygmies. His reputation as a devoted doctor extended far beyond the mission territory, and we hope that the people he prepared for the job will in one way or another continue to serve their people." – Father Leopold Waterval
