Dr. Jerry Galloway (third from left) celebrating becoming a Brother
After leaving the Peace Corps, Jerry took the position of Medical Director at a government sponsored clinic in the Quad Cities region of Illinois and Iowa. Joyce Godwin Grubbs was assigned as Jerry’s nurse. She would play an important role in the direction of Jerry’s life. (https://joycegodwingrubbs.webs.com)
Jerry did not let it be known to his co-workers that he was still angry and that he planned to stay in the United States only long enough to win his dad over to let him go back into the Peace Corps.
One day, Jerry called Joyce to his office, to tell her ahead of the other staff, that he was going to become a Catholic missionary. Part of the process would be to become a Brother through Missionhurst. Jerry would go to the seminary, take vows and he hoped to be sent back to the Congo.
Though his family wanted him at home, his dad was finally able to let go of his son. When negotiating to become a Brother with Missionhurst, Jerry did not think that he should have to go to the seminary. He believed that since he was an Internal Medicine Specialist he would go to help others through his medical skills. Missionhurst wanted to send Jerry to Haiti, but, he got an exception and was assigned to the Congo. Jerry was now ready to return, not only to save lives as a doctor, but, to save souls through teaching God’s word and sharing God’s love.
