Brothers (1982)

Updated: Dec 17, 2019

Excerpt from draft of "Apostle to the Pygmies – The Doctor Jerry Galloway Story”

On Sunday, Luba’s little brother, Mboomba, accidentally knocked over and broke Luba’s new kerosene lamp. He got angry and beat Mboomba with a branch. Luba stopped by on his way to school on Monday and told me about the incident.

“Luba,” I said to him, “There is no earthly possession that has enough value to cause you to beat your brother.”

Luba was unconvinced of that. Awhile later, Mboomba came by. He had tears in his eyes. “I do not love my brother anymore!” he cried to me. “I would rather die than talk to him.”

I looked and saw large scratches and welts on his head and legs from the beating. How could Luba do such a thing? I left a note in my office for Luba, as he always stopped by on his way home from school. I wrote that Mboomba’s wounds recalled the wounds of Christ after His scourging.

During the past four prayer sessions on brotherhood and love, we had talked about seeing Christ in each other. Luba did not come back for his usual study session, but he sent a letter to me. His message said that he could not come to study until he found his brother and asked him for forgiveness.

The Gospel reading for the day was Luke 12:13-21, where a rich man built a bigger grain barn to store all his earthly goods rather than share them with his brothers. He placed more importance on worldly goods instead of growing rich in the sight of God. Luba wrote that he felt like that terrible rich man and could not face me until he was right with God and with his little brother.
