Congo Archery Contest

Writer's picture: Kent GallowayKent Galloway

Recently, I viewed a 40-year-old video Dr. Jerry Galloway filmed at the Pendjua mission and took some screenshots from it. Seeing the Pendjua mission, people, dancing, singing, and other activities was amazing.

These screenshots are of the Batwa Pygmy boys having an archery competition. It looks somewhat chaotic, but they appear very competitive and take their archery seriously. This practice will help them be better hunters when they enter the rainforest to provide meat for a meal.

The winner appears to hold a piece of fruit they used for a target.

You can go to www.courageinthecongo.com for more photos and stories from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
