Healthcare for Congo

Writer's picture: Kent GallowayKent Galloway

Dr. Jerry Galloway's life work brought healthcare to the impoverished Batwa people of eastern Congo. I am honored to be on the board of Friends of IMCK as we manage an endowment fund to help support healthcare in the Kasai region of western Congo. Please read more about IMCK and the PAX clinic below.

Did you know that part of IMCK is the Pax Polyclinic in the heart of Kananga, which is a city of 1.5 million? The PAX Polyclinic has been an asset to the people of Kananga considering the difficulty in getting transport to the Tshikaji facilities located six miles away. Regularly scheduled public transportation is not available between the two locations.

Now, the challenge: how do you run a clinic in a large city that does not provide utilities such as power, water and sewers? Install generators, solar panels, wells and your own septic tank! And it’s working, though with constant needs of maintenance and repair.

Recent visitors commented: “What struck me at PAX was how clean it was - amazing since many of the second-floor hallways are open to the very busy streets below.”

"I have the utmost respect for the Congolese people. They provide excellent medical care with the facilities and circumstances at hand, whatever that may be.”

Proceeds from IMCK Endowment Fund have made it possible to sustain the operations at the PAX Polyclinic. The clinic provides such a hopeful and positive presence in the lives of the people of Kananga and the Kasai regions. Please consider donating to this fund by going to www.imck.org/how-to-give.
