When I went home, I pleaded with God not to let my boy die. Then, I got called to the radio transmitter to talk to two students in Kinshasa. I stopped at the hospital to find John still asleep. When I returned, two boys came running and told me John did not seem to be breathing right. I rushed again to the hospital, and the nurse had already pulled the IV out. "How did he die?" I asked the nurse. "He had respiratory arrest and then cardiac arrest," she responded.
I fell on the bed and cried, "Oh, God, no!" We all broke down and cried. I gathered myself, went home, and sent for the carpenter to make a casket. The boys and girls ran to the hospital and screamed and cried. George followed me to the mission, and I said to him, "John is dead. I cannot believe he is dead. His poor parents will be so distraught. Oh, God, my boy is dead."
