Meningitis Outbreak - Part 1 (2006)

At 9:00 p.m., some boys brought a sick intern to my house, who had a temperature of 103 degrees, chills, and a headache. I treated him for malaria and told the boys to bring him back to my house in the morning. The boys brought him and left him on my bed before heading to school. I finished at the hospital and went and found the boy in a near coma. We took him to the hospital on a stretcher. I performed a spinal tap that showed he had meningitis. He went into a comatose state. I sat at his bedside from 11:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. without eating or drinking. I could do nothing but pray. I vowed that I would not allow another boy or girl to die without me being present.

The boys organized teams, so there were always six at his bedside. At 5:00 p.m., the boy's breathing became irregular. Everyone became frightened. I said, "Jesus, it is better that I die, and he lives." Three hours later, the boy opened his eyes, and I asked, "Do you know me?" He nodded, yes. Praise the Lord! I went home five hours later and collapsed into bed.
