FINAL EXCERPT from "Courage in the Congo: A Doctor's Fight to Save the Pygmies"
Available now on Amazon:
While home in the U.S., my siblings begged me to remain. I replied that I wanted to be with my family in Pendjua, and I would stay there until I died. I told them that my Botoa brothers and sisters always said, 'Your bones belong to us, and they are going to stay with us so that our children and we can visit you.'
I spoke to Bishop Philippe about my desire. He was thrilled and agreed to allow me to stay in Pendjua. He said, "It is a grace that the Lord wishes you remain with the Pygmies for eternity."
When I arrived at the villages in the Pendjua sector, people lined the streets. They screamed and beat drums and informed the other villagers of my arrival. Almost everyone packed the roadways, and there were over 300 people at the mission. I had never experienced such a welcome since I came here in 1981.
The sound of singing filled the air as my students gathered outside my room early Sunday morning. When I stepped out of my room, the crowd practically crushed me. "What a joyful return!" I exclaimed. Joy overwhelmed me, and I thanked God for bringing me back home.
