Rainy Season (1981)

Updated: Dec 17, 2019

Excerpt from draft of "Apostle to the Pygmies – The Doctor Jerry Galloway Story”

The first week in October meant a time in the hospital, with many cases of diarrhea from amoebae and worms. When the rainy season came, all the creeks became contaminated. The people went to the bathroom on the hillsides and then the waste washed into the creeks. At the mission, we boiled and filtered all the water. I taught the first group of barefoot doctors the necessity of getting the people to dig and use outhouses.

Luba prepared to give his first lesson on worms to the village of Ngondo Banga in two weeks. A hospital in that village would never have a lasting impact on the health of the people if their ignorance of diseases was not overcome. The Saturday before the class, I made a plan to go to the village with my microscope and collect fifty stool samples. I would show them the worm eggs and worms in their stool and make them an offer. If every household would dig and use an outhouse, then I would treat everyone in the village with worm medicine every three months for one year, at no charge.
