Rainy Season (1982)

Updated: Dec 17, 2019

Excerpt from draft of "Apostle to the Pygmies – The Doctor Jerry Galloway Story

During the last week of July, the hospital was full to the brim. There were a higher number of children admitted with malnutrition. The problem was that the rainy season, which usually ended in June, had continued. The high-water levels reduced the fish the Batwa caught. The months of June through August were the times when many fish were available, and malnutrition was not usually a problem. But the rainy season made it even more critical for me to encourage the Batwa to plant rice, peanuts, and beans, which were good sources of protein. The daily diet when there were no fish consisted of manioc leaves and manioc roots, which filled them up, but did not contain enough protein.
