Sabbath (1982)

The second Sunday of March was one of those calamitous days. It began with the prayer group’s intent to plant peanuts after the meeting. During the morning prayer session, we went over four scriptures, where God said that we must keep the Sabbath Day holy. I thought about our intent to work, and whether we should postpone the planting until the next day. Since the boys would be in school, Sunday would be our only free day to plant, so it should be all right to work that day. We headed to the field and shelled two pounds of peanuts to plant.

Bola walked over to see how last week’s planted field was growing. Bola let out a cry, and the group ran over to look. The crows had eaten over fifty percent of the new shoots. We felt sick to our stomachs and the boys had tears in their eyes. We figured it was useless to plant more until we could come up with a solution to keep the crows from eating the new shoots. Once the shoots were six inches tall, the crows would not bother them again, until two weeks before harvest time.

The group decided to ask one of the teenage boys who did not go to school to guard the field for them in exchange for part of the harvest. We also decided that we would no longer work in the fields on Sunday again. Sunday would be our day to pray, relax, play soccer or go fishing, but not do any manual work.
