Small Town Beginnings

Jerry Galloway was born in Mendota, IL in 1938. Mendota is a small farm town located 100 miles southwest of Chicago. Mendota is surrounded by rich farmland and vast fields of soybeans and corn.

Jerry went to Holy Cross grade school and then graduated from Mendota High School in 1956. Jerry attended the annual Sweet Corn Festivals. These summertime events featured a parade. Del Monte provided free sweet corn that was cooked using a vintage steam engine.

Most of all Jerry enjoyed fishing with his uncle Carl (my grandfather). Their fishing trips would take them to Indian Creek, Green River and Johnson’s Pond.

In 1960, Jerry’s parents moved the family to Aurora, IL, located 30 miles west of Chicago. Jerry attended Marquette University School of Medicine and graduated in 1965.

Jerry was allowed a leave to return home every three years from his mission work (1980-2007). He always came back to Mendota to visit his family and friends and do a little fishing.
