"The Apostle of the Pygmies" (2006)

An excerpt from "Courage in the Congo: A Doctor's Fight to Save the Pygmies"

On my way back to Kinshasa, I heard that when news of my illness spread, Cardinal Etsou in Kinshasa asked all the parishes to pray for "the apostle of the Pygmies."

I finally made it back. Much to my surprise, I found Father Yves staying at the procure. He had a bicycle accident in July and suffered severe back pain. Father Yves could not get out of bed by himself. I looked at his X-rays, and he had compressed vertebrae and decalcification of the bones. He had a low blood count, and his feet and legs swelled. I told Sister La Clerck that I thought Father Yves had multiple myeloma, and the doctors in Belgium should check for it.

I flew to Kiri, and my friends were happy to see me. When we crossed into the Pendjua sector, people yelled and cheered as we passed through each village. We arrived after dark, but a large group gathered to greet me. They were also eager to hear news about Father Yves.
