The Military Arrives (1981)

Updated: Dec 17, 2019

Excerpt from draft of "Apostle to the Pygmies – The Doctor Jerry Galloway Story”

In mid-July, the military showed up in Pendjua and raised havoc in the village. Many of the soldiers were thieves and stole the people’s tools, chicken and food. The military unit had been sent from Kiri to a village on the other side of Pendjua, but on their return they stayed in Pendjua a few days.

The week prior, a man accidentally discharged a shotgun in the other village. Three people were shot, and one, a three-year-old boy, was killed by a wound to the head. They brought the boy to the mission hospital, but he died within an hour of his arrival. The other two were not wounded as severely. The family of the deceased boy had tied up the man that fired the shotgun and were going to kill him. The village chief sent for the military, but before they arrived, the man escaped, went to Kiri, and turned himself in to the police for protection.
