At the end of the week, I gave an open book test to the eighth graders. One boarding school student started to cry as I passed out the books. I gave him a book, told him to stop crying, and answer the questions. The boy continued to cry, and I leaned down and asked him what made him cry.
"My cousin came from my village and told me my 20-year-old brother has died in Kiri," he wept. I sent the boy back to the home and told him to wait for me, and I would give him some money for funeral expenses. When I arrived at the house, I asked the boy what caused his brother's death. "My father took him to see the prophet to get rid of his fetishes, but my brother did not give them all up, so he died." Upon further questioning, I discovered I had treated the brother for congenital heart disease and heart failure. I figured that the 40-mile walk to Kiri became too much for him.
The "prophet" Moses' mother lived in Pendjua, and he came to visit her before I left for Kiri. The villagers and students rushed to see him. I did not get to see him, but I told my head nurse to send three patients to him – one with gangrene of the leg who needed an amputation, one with a hernia, and a deaf-mute. Moses left early, so the patients did not get to see the "miracle worker."
