The "Prophet" Moses - Part 2 (2005)

An excerpt from "Courage in the Congo: A Doctor's Fight to Save the Pygmies"

In another incident, Father Daniel's store clerk went to Kiri to see the "prophet" to get rid of some fetishes. The prophet asked him to give him all the fetishes, which he did. Then the prophet said, "You haven't given me all the fetishes." The man said, "Yes, I have." So, the prophet made him drink some of his "special water." They believed that if the person did not give up all his fetishes, then he would die. When the man had walked ten miles away from Kiri, he dropped dead. Everyone believed that the man lied to the prophet.

An elderly blind man from Pendjua went to see the "prophet." The story going around claimed that when the blind man returned, he could see. I asked the cook if he saw the man. The cook said the man walked by himself and did not need anyone to lead him around. Later, Mama Antoinette saw the man and reported that he walked with a stick and bumped into everything, so he remained blind. Two couples were leaving next week to take their deaf-mute children to see the "prophet." We would find out if he cured them. I remained skeptical.
