Excerpt from draft of "Apostle to the Pygmies – The Doctor Jerry Galloway Story
Imono, one of the members of the prayer group came to my door to tell me that a soldier had come into his hut and took his axe, a duck and a basket of palm nuts. Furious, Imono and I marched over to the building where the soldier was. We asked him what right he had to break in to someone’s house and steal their things. I cited a book of laws for Zaire which stated that no soldier could enter a house unless he was pursuing a criminal. The soldier’s eyebrows raised as he was amazed that I knew the laws. After several attempts to explain why he did it, he gave back the axe, but kept the duck.
That same night, a mission worker named Weli was arrested by the same soldier. I immediately went to the chief and asked him to do something about it. The chief went to the jail and released Weli. The soldiers left on Friday and everyone breathed a sigh of relief, hoping they would not see any soldiers again for a long time.
